Cockburn and Son Construction was started by Paula Cockburn when her son was born in 2007. Paula wanted more flexibility in working hours to be with her new baby – hence, went back after a 10 year hiatus to the construction business. She named the company Cockburn and Son in honor of her son.
Never one for the mundane, Paula started in the building industry in 1980 when she left school. She’d wanted to become a mechanic but couldn’t find a training facility in South Africa at the time. So instead, she was apprenticed to a bricklayer in JHB for 3 years. Paula moved back to CT, worked briefly for Stocks and Stocks as a bricklayer, and then started working for the Black Builders Association in Gugulethu when bonds were first offered to Black Homeowners. She built a number of mass housing developments in the Western Cape, and later shifted to financial institutions as a bond assessor. Her experience in working from the bottom up from bricklaying to housing inspections for financial institutions has equipped her to offer intimate technical knowledge on construction as well as having a trained eye for aesthetics.
Paula is passionate about the creative process of building and enjoys helping clients to conceptualize spaces. Her team is able to manage the entire process from drawing of plans, to builders, electricians, plumbers, cabinet makers, as well as the co-ordination of Telkom, eGoli gas and certificates of compliance. Paula uses internal and external kitchen manufacturers and has an extensive network in the supply and install of various stone, a color consultant – hereby offering a systemic service.
